چکیده

While there is so far no direct evidence linking coalescences of double neutron star systems to gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), they are a certainly a very plausible candidate for the subclass of short GRBs as they can provide huge reservoirs of gravitational binding energy and are expected to lead naturally to short overall durations with variations on millisecond time scales. Moreover, they possess the among GRB progenitor models rare property that they are known to really occur.

Feeding Compact Objects: Accretion on All Scales

By collecting 17 short gamma-ray bursts with necessary data, we find a correlation of Lp ∝ E .7 p ,i , which is very consistent with that derived from a greatly expanded sample of 148 Swift long gamma-ray bursts. It is argued that the radiation mechanism of both long and short gamma-ray bursts should be similar, i.e., of quasi-thermal origin caused by the photosphere and the dissipation occurri...

The Lowest-mass Stellar Black Holes: Catastrophic Death of Neutron Stars in Gamma-ray Bursts

Mergers of double neutron stars are considered the most likely progenitors for short gamma-ray bursts. Indeed such a merger can produce a black hole with a transient accreting torus of nuclear matter (Lee & Ramirez-Ruiz 2007, Oechslin & Janka 2006), and the conversion of a fraction of the torus mass-energy to radiation can power a gamma-ray burst (Nakar 2006). Using available binary pulsar obse...

Linearly Polarized X-ray Flares following Short Gamma-ray Bursts

Soft X-ray flares were detected to follow the short-duration gamma-ray burst GRB 050724. The temporal properties of the flares suggest that they are likely due to the late time activity of the central engine. We argue that if short GRBs are generated through compact star mergers, as is supported by the recent observations, the jet powering the late X-ray flares must be launched via magnetic pro...

Last Moments in the Life of a Compact Binary System: Gravitational Waves, Gamma-ray Bursts and Magnetar Formation

The first detections of afterglows from short gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) have confirmed the previous suspicion that they are triggered by a different central engine than long bursts. In particular, the recent detections of short GRBs in galaxies without star formation lends support to the idea that an old stellar population is involved. Most prominent are mergers of either double neutron stars or ...

Gamma-ray bursts: a Centauro’s cry?

Gamma-ray bursts are enigmatic flashes of gamma-rays at cosmological distances, so bright that the implied energetics is astounding: energies of order of about solar rest-energy are liberated in a time scale of the order of seconds in space regions only a few kilometers in size. Central engines capable to produce such enormous explosions, leading to a highly relativistic expending fireballs, re...
